Last 4 in Contender

In a surprise knockout, Soren Mongkontong lost his fight against Dzhabar Askerov in episode 12 of The Contender Asia. Mongkontong was the favorite to be the last Muay Thai fighter to go through to the semi-finals, but his hopes were dashed when he was knocked out in the first round by Askerov. Knockouts in Muay Thai fights are very rare and this was a shocker. Askerov hit Mongkontong once with a strong right hook and knocked him down. When he got up, it was obvious the punch had rattled him as he was staggering and looking dizzy. Within less than a minute, Dzhabar came at him again and this time, with another punch, he knocked him down and also knocked him out. When he came around, it was to the knowledge that Dzhabar Askerov was the winner of the fight, and the last Muay Thai fighter to go through to the semi-final round.

Thai Boxing Introduction

I’m a huge fan of National Geographic’s Fight Quest. And on one of their episodes, they featured the 8 deadly weapons of Muay Thai. I can still remember one of the hosts, who’s also a boxer, saying that a battle between a boxer and a Muay Thai specialist will always end up in favor of the latter. The boxer would always end up laying on the ground unconscious.

Combinations & Attacks in Muay Thai

Muay Thai gives the competitor an advantage in a fight, in and out of the ring. Let me start you of with a little of my background/ identity in relation to the sport of Muay Thai. Growing up as a kid in the Philippines in the 90’s, I was always glued to the television watching Thai boxing competitions. I liked the sport as a kid, because I thought it was more “realistic” than boxing matches. To my surprise, the competitions that allowed elbows and knees ended quick (usually in the 1st and 2nd rounds). I’ve sparred in the ring and have been in a couple of street fights in high school (in the Philippines), and I can tell you from experience that the most brutal techniques always have an element of muay thai into it. Without further ado, LETS GET TO THE GOOD STUFF!!! (The techniques).

Pacquiao Vs Margarito Fight Schedule

The latest happenings I learned from Antonio Margarito is that he transferred to Oxnard, California after his training at the City of South El Monte, California, where the trainings sessions is in form of mountainous road work and preliminary gym work out. At present, Antonio Margarito is training under the supervision of his coach Robert Garcia the former IBF junior lightweight champion. According to the report, they usually spend the rest of their training sessions by running in the seashore at the Coastal area. Robert Garcia once said, “Pacquiao is very beatable.” Antonio Margarito’s coach Robert Garcia thinks that Manny Pacquiao seems unbeatable, however; he noticed some faults to Manny during his previous fights that will be advantageous to their part. Garcia said that the size and strength of his warrior is their secret weapon for their unstoppable victory.

Boxing: Instruction At The Health Club

Boxing is a heavy sport. It is heavy in a way that it needs rigorous coaching just to get beaten up in an official fight. It demands a massive deal of conditioning and toughness that must be maintained by the boxer. In boxing, you would have to love the sport to stay strong at all occasions otherwise the participant will see himself or herself lying on the floor unconscious. Instruction with boxing is not a joke. It entails time, skill and timing. Most of all, the boxer should posses determination, persistence and discipline. These can all be attained via health club training.

Boxing Flashback: Manny Pacquiao Vs. Oscar De La Hoya

In professional prizefighting, its common to see high level fighters go from viable to geriatric before your eyes. Boxers, in particular, have a difficult time outrunning the ravages of age. Fighters seldom grow old gracefully, at least in the competitive sense. The exceptions–Archie Moore, George Foreman, James Toney–are few and far between. More often than not a professional prizefighter goes from being a legitimate contender to the brink of retirement in a matter of minutes. It can happen that suddenly, and most recently Mexican superstar Oscar De La Hoya was the latest victim. He looked utterly lost as a relentless Manny Pacquiao used his speed and workrate to completely frustrate De La Hoya en route to a 8th round TKO victory at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Mexican Boxing Legend Carlos Palomino In Profile

Its not whether you win or lose, its how you play the game. That may be the oldest sports cliche in the world, but for the mainstream sports media, and the fans that depend on them for their information, its just not true. Its all about whether you win or lose. Turn on any sports talk radio show and you’ll be subjected to all manner of banal discussion to reinforce my point. Karl Malone and Dan Marino weren’t truly great because they never won a championship. The Utah Jazz and Buffalo Bills weren’t great teams because they were unable to take their sports ultimate honor. If teams and players aren’t being berated for a failure to win, they’re simply forgotten. If you can name the losing team in the past ten NBA championships you’ve got a disturbing knowledge of meaningless sports trivia.
