Utah Pets Still Need Exercise In Hot Weather

Hot summer weather has returned to Utah. When you are out enjoying the summer weather, don’t forget to keep your pet on a safe, hot weather exercise routine. If you’d like some hot weather exercise tips, here is a list from the Humane Society of Utah:

- Exercise your pet in the cool of the early morning or in the evening. You are both sure to enjoy the temperature and being outdoors while avoiding over heating.

- When exercising your pet out in the sun, it would be nice to reward him with a cold drink of cool, clean water. Keep your water cold by carrying it in a gallon thermos. You and your pet will enjoy the water!

- Walk you dog on grassy paths when you can. In the heat of the summer, asphalt gets very hot and can burn your dog’s paws easily. Avoid hot asphalt and stick to grassy paths for safety’s and your dog’s sake.

- You may want to consult with your veterinarian when determining a healthy exercise regimen for your overweight pet. An overweight animal needs exercise, but be sure that it is a moderate amount of exercise to avoid overheating your pet in the summer weather.

- It is common for lawns and gardens to be sprayed with insecticides or other chemicals as part of summer time care. If you notice that your pet has is sick after having played in an area that may have been sprayed with chemicals and has been poisoned, contact your veterinarian at once.

- When you are exercising your animal, you will want to keep an eye out for signs of heat stroke, such as heavy panting, vomiting, lethargy, fever or rapid heart beat. If you notice that your pet is displaying these types of behaviors after a vigorous exercise session, you may want to contact your veterinarian.

It’s important that your pet continues to exercise and have fun in the sun, just be sure that you are aware of your pet’s needs with hot weather exercising.
