Basement Regeneration Tips On How To Paint Concrete Floors
Most garages or basement are built on concrete flooring. These can be easily finished by painting rather than any other more expensive treatments. Painting your concrete flooring will not only make it prettier but also more durable and easier to clean. If painting is carried out correctly, your concrete floor can last for many years.
How to Begin:
This is not a very expensive home renovation project but it is not something that is done overnight either. First thing you have to do is to ensure that your floor is completely dry before starting on your painting project. If you notice wet spots, especially from the basement, it is better to consult a professional first to fix that seepage problem.
When you are sure that the floor is now completely dry, you can now scrub it to clean residues from chemicals and greases. This is important especially if the floor you wish to paint on is your garage or shop area. This is critical because the paint would not be able to cling completely if there are any foreign materials present.
Some kitty litter would be very handy in absorbing most of that grease on the floor if any. Scrub the floor using Goof Off and then rinse. Afterward, scrub the floor with the use of some TSP mixture; rinse and repeat several times until the mop looks clean after rinsing. Allow about three days for the floor to dry completely before the floor would be considered ready for painting.
Some final preparations before you start painting:
Use a sander or some 80-grit paper to smoothen the floor, remove any bumpy potion or materials that are stuck on the floor’s surface. A tack clothe would also be helpful in removing some residue from the sanding that the vacuum could miss.
Now it is time to fix any cracks that might be present. Use Cement Fixall to plug these cracks or little holes and be sure to let it dry thoroughly.
Finally it is time to paint!
First, you will need two applications of stain blocker and a primer like Kilz. These applications must dry completely in between applications. Now you may apply a top quality latex paint of your choosing. A paint compressor or a roller will work fine for the painting.
Applying the finishing touches on your newly-painted floor:
At this juncture, if you wish you may add some designs like geometric shapes or faux stone to make the floor look even more beautiful. You can express your creativity at this point, just making sure the floor is allowed to dry thoroughly before finishing.
How to finish your newly-painted concrete floor:
Using a quarter-inch nap roller, finish your painted concrete floor with two applications of Breakthrough sealer. This is full of fumes so a respirator mask is a must here. Then, of course, let it dry thoroughly.
Now your floor is complete. You may want to throw in an area rug or some decorative rugs for some highlight as it is still concrete after all. Only difference is that you may now proudly claim that it’s already a beautiful concrete!
