Paint Your Own Floor Rug
If you can’t find a rug that will match your room decor or style you may want to consider painting your own rug. You can paint a rug using stencil, paint, stamping, or dye. You can use a simple paintbrush to create the perfect rug for your home.
Some of the supplies you will need in order to paint rugs for home decor include a rug (you might want to start with an old rug for your first time); a pattern (either stencils or stamps); fabric paint or dye and a set of brushes.
Because you are painting you want to make sure that you have the correct pattern. Use a piece of paper to place your pattern on before you begin. If you seen the pattern somewhere else you can either take a picture of it or cut it out of a book or magazine to use as your pattern. Before you get started make sure that you have the area covered with a large tarp or several newspapers. This will ensure that the paint does not go where it shouldn’t. If it’s pretty outside then you may want to paint outdoors.
If you have chosen to paint with fabric paint you will be pleased to know that it is washable if you get any on your skin. But it does stick well to fabrics so it won’t come off. Fabric paint should be used if you are using a stencil for your design or if you are using stamps. Place your paint on a palette or a sheet of waxed paper and now you are ready to begin.
Fabric dye is a great to use but it can be tricky. It doesn’t come off of your hands as easy and sometimes the colors can bleed onto another. But fabric dye has a great look on rugs when used correctly.
Fabric paint can be purchased at any paint store or hobby shop. Fabric paint can do what you need to do but without the excess cost. If you get fabric paint on your skin you can remove it by using warm water and soap.
Using fabric dye- Fabric dye is indelible and will not easily come off your hands. There are several fabric dyes on the market. You can use a fabric dye as you would fabric paint, although because dye tends to bleed, you may get a more muddled result. However, fabric dye will not come off or rub off, it is permanent.
Many people are intimidated when using a fabric dye on clothes because of its permanence. Be sure to cover existing areas so that they do not get dye on them and wear gloves to prevent dye getting on your hands.
When you begin you may want to start at a corner of your rug to make sure that you are creating the look you set out to do. Once your area rug is completed you can show off your wonderful masterpiece for years to come.
